Interested in Being Part of The Festival….?

March 19, 2012

Each year the Southside Festival entertains some 15,000 people from the local community and it’s surrounding environs.  This massive undertaking is performed by a small number of volunteers who give up a couple of days per week to plan and promote the event.

Last year we managed to become involved a Charity Cricket Match in aid of flood victims in Pakistan, Govanhill Fun day as well as numerous promotional days at the Queens Park Farmers Market, Shawlands Arcade and the Clydesdale Boat Regatta on the River Clyde. We undertake leaflet drops all over the southside and hold participation events to help generate interest in the festival. We also arrange afternoon and evening events at the Glasshouses (Halloween, Santa’s Grotto along with numerous gigs and Art in the Park).

To top it of we also organise the finale that is jam packed with fun and entertainment for all ages and includes; a main stage for live music, dance and comedy; Numerous marquees filled with, arts, crafts, dance, fitness and relaxation;  Displays from the Vintage Fire Engine Society, Strathclyde Fire Brigade, LES and the Owl Experience; Free bus service and a number of inflatable slides, along with climbing wall and the ever popular face painting.  Also available on the day is an opportunity to purchase some of the fine local produce produced in and around the southside and the chance to sit back and relax over a cold drink in the licensed marquee.

As the festival has grown so to has the demand for volunteers to help steward the event and this is were we need your help.  If you are over 18, and interested in becoming a Steward then we would love to hear from you.  All we ask is for you give up one day of your time (or two if you are willing to help out on the Sunday 27th!) to help steward the main event on Saturday 26th May.  Without volunteers to steward the event the work of the Steering Group would be done in vain.  Thus this mutually important role is crucial to the smooth running of the festival and the safety of its visitors.

If you are interested then please come along to the Participate event tomorrow – Monday from 7.30pm 19th of March @ Govanhill Baths, 99 Calder Street, Glasgow, G42.  If you can’t make this meeting then don’t worry you can always get in touch through the enquiry form – we will be in touch to acknowledge your request and invite you to a Stewards Meeting to go over the festival layout, the role you will adopt and answer any questions you may have.

Event Update

March 3, 2012

Hi all just a quick update on how things are going with the organisation to this years festival and to provide an opportunity to post a couple of reminders.  As all ways time is never on our side which means we try to focus on our objectives and get as much finalised as we can at each meeting.  Preliminary plans of the infrastructure for the festival will be discussed this week at a multi-agency meeting with Glasgow City Council and other relevant agencies.  Then this coming Saturday it’s of to George Street for a training session to cover forthcoming changes to Public Entertainment Licensing which will take effect from 1st April 2012.  Following this is discussions on what acts/entertainment we will require to occupy the Marquee’s and open spaces around the Festival grounds.

Recruitment imageAs you will appreciate there is a lot going on.  We are astonished by the number of requests that have been submitted via the enquiry form.  Rest assure we will be in touch as soon as we can.   Note also that we have organised another information/recruitment day on the 19th March details on the previous post.  We are especially looking for Volunteers to help out on the day with regard to stewarding, keeping the grounds tidy and providing information to visitors on whats on and locations of amenities.  Thanks to everyone who has been in touch already with an interest in volunteering – we will be in touch.
