Big Southside Festival Quiz -The Results!

May 24, 2012

If you were down in the Langside Bar Last night there was a good chance you would have taken part in the Big Southside Festival Quiz.  If not you must have been in for the food cause its great.  Thanks to Paul, the quiz master, for asking some difficult questions and applying his own unique brand of humor.

In response the teams responded with their own unique blend of heckle and then the  laughter followed – my side are still splitting!  Seven teams took part but only six finished as one team ‘The Office’ split after the first round.  Being privy to the score sheet I’m surprised they even handed their answer sheet in for the first round.

Anyway, that then left six teams to compete and as the barriers broke down the competitive nature of all involved became more apparent.  Oh the jeers!… Oh the cheers…!  As each answer was read out each team felt that they had gained a competitive advantage over the other.  No more so than the SG’s.

These guys had everything to gain and nothing to loose as they tried to win lottery tickets that were up for grabs as one of the many prizes on offer.  Hats of to them as they will try anything to raise funds in order to give the people of the Southside the festival they deserve.

As it happened the SG’s and their superior intellect won the quiz with a remarkable 45 points. They also won a lottery ticket but didn’t win the lottery – awe well that’s life.

Hats off also to ‘Beagle Mania’ who came a close second, on 38 points.  These guys also won the Big Bear and named him Wilson then in the spirit of the evening donated him to the barman who instantly fell in love with the big cuddly ball of fluff.

The team in third place with 37 points was ‘Lucy and the Bear’ and yes you guessed it this bears eyes are farther apart.

Interestingly, the bear (the one in the photo not the other bear) has some significance as it related to the top prize of the night.  Two invites (yes invites) to a mystery party in the Glasshouses following the festival with a mystery band. It would be more than my life’s worth if I told what the relationship between Lucy, the Bear (the one with the eyes) and the band but I’m sure it will come out in time.

Anyway, as it happens ‘Still Not Given Me a Name Yet’ were the lucky winners of the invites and many other prizes on the night.  Just look at those happy faces. Well done and we hope you had a safe journey home.

Right.  That leaves us with the two teams that were joint last ‘the Bar Staff’ and the one and only ‘Gruesome Twosome’.  Fortunately the Bar staff had an excuse – they were working!  The Gruesome Twosome however battled to the end and happily took away one of the other lottery tickets but like the SG’s were disappointed that the numbers didn’t come up.  Better luck next time girls – you rock!

Hope to see everyone at the Festival this coming Saturday. Cheers SSF

Its a Dogs Life

May 24, 2012

It would appear that since we done the feature on the “Southside Festival Program Launch” on May 20th the photo of the puppy along side the program has excited some people.  We have received a number of enquirers asking whether it is a competition or not.  Well unfortunately it isn’t but we would still like you to send in your pics and we can use them to make a slide show once the festival is over.  Here’s one that was been sent in today. Can you better that?

Southside Festival Program Launch

May 20, 2012

Did you detect a change in the weather yesterday? Did you feel it was a little warmer than Friday? Were you down at the Farmers Market? If you were you would have realised that the heat was coming from the Festival Team making sure “everyone and their dog” got a copy of the program.  10,000 went to print and it looks as though there will be a need for more as it would appear that there are a few collectors out there.  If you are one of those people then we would love to hear from you.  If you don’t have a copy and want one then you may still be able to pick one up from various cafes, pubs, clubs, churches, community centres, arcades and shops in and around the southside.

This years program is packed full of descriptions of the entertainment and activities that will be taking place during the 26th and 27th.  Don’t forget however to check the whats on section of this site to see what other festival events are goining on throughout May.

As you will notice (if you have your copy) this is the festivals fifth year and we hope you will agree that it is a unique celebration of the place in which we live created by the people for the people of the Southside in the hope that we can build capacity and community spirit in these difficult financial times. Like everyone the organisers of the festival have had to do more with less thus you may notice the program is a little shorter as we had to drop some of the events up in the glasshouses that would take place in the weeks leading up to the big day to ensure the Festival has something for everyone in the community, hence for the kids we have the age old favourite inflatables, face painting arts and crafts and much more besides.

There is live music from The Lorellei, The New Piccadillys, Button Up and The Lemon Party among others. There will be plenty of come and try activities in the Sports Arena (just don’t forget to bring your trainers). A place to get your hands dirty in the Earth Zone or if thats just to much the chance to chillax with a soooooothing massage.  There will also be a number of commercial and community stalls so you can purchase local produce or find out what local activities take place through out the year in the Southside – so get involved, ask questions and enjoy.

If you have your program you will also notice that the procession has been extended this year inline with popular demand.  You can follow the procession as it leaves Newlandsfield Road at 11am and heads through Shawlands, down Pollokshaws Road.and if you miss it here you can catch it as it turns into Alison Street or as it winds its way up Victoria Road and finally into the Festival Site via Queens Drive. If you are from the Southside then its time to be loud, be proud ………..

Festivities will continue from then on till 10pm – then its bed time unless you have plenty of energy and you want to take a trip to the Comedy Shed to see classic acts with Des Mclean, Patrick Rolink, Susie McCabe and Scott Gibson.  Oh the choices!  if you fancy this then you better break away from the live music and make your way over to the Shed as this starts at 8pm – tickets cost £10 available from Ticket Scotland.

Don’t forget folks that the Festival extends to Sunday the 27th with Picnic in the Park where there will be a full line up of bands on the Main Stage.  As it says its a picnic in the park so bring a hamper and plenty of nibbles to eat as you listen to some fantastic live music through out the day.

May 16, 2012

This Saturday we will be appearing at the Queens Park Farmers Market once again.  But this time it will be to launch this years festival program so no matter the weather please come by and pick up yours. This will be the fifth year of the festival and as always you will find something for everyone.  We have plenty of activities lined up for the very young, the not so young and everyone in between. Oh I cannae wait till the 26th May
